FORTER CASTLE

Perthshire, Scotland

Forter Castle was built in 1560 as “Fortalice”, a fortified house to protect and fortify the entrance of the Balloch Pass to Glenshee and the Moneca Pass to Braemar and further north.

AT A GLANCE

James Ogilvy, the 5th Lord of Airlie built Forter Castle only for it to fall eighty years later in 1640, the story of which is beautifully painted on the ceiling of the castle.

In 1988 father and daughter team, Robert and Katharine Pooley, started lovingly and carefully restoring the castle back to it’s former glory as well as furnishing it with all the creature comforts of the 21st Century that any visitor would expect. Great care and attention has been made ensuring that the authenticity of the castle’s history has been retained and the result is a wonderfully warm, welcoming, comfortable and fascinatingly intriguing Scottish castle.

If you are looking to stay in a Scottish castle, Forter Castle is a fabulous choice for a family vacation with all the wonders that Scotland’s Perthshire has to offer with beautiful scenery and walks, plentiful outdoor activities and local culture. This is your highland retreat for the length of your stay. A Scottish sporting experience can be organized by us during which you can enjoy archery, air rifle shooting, axe throwing and cross bow firing amongst other activities. There are also beautiful walks into the hills, stunning local golf courses, horse riding, fishing, stalking, mountain biking and skiing (when there is snow in the Cairngorms).

For those who are not so keen on the outdoors, there is plenty of shopping, fine dining and whisky tasting at some of the local distilleries.

Forter Castle being only 1 1/2 hours drive from Edinburgh means that day trips into the capital can be arranged along with our wonderful guide who will take you to all the important historical parts of the city and tell you all about the history of Edinburgh. Visits to Edinburgh Castle, art galleries, theaters and other places of interest can all be arranged and during August there is the Edinburgh International Festival to experience along with the Edinburgh Military Tattoo.
