The land on which Lough Cutra Castle sits has a fascinating and varied history which can be traced as far back as 866 A.D. However, the castle we see today was built by Colonel Charles Vereker (later Viscount Gort) after he inherited the land in 1797.

Viscount Gort was eventually forced to sell the castle having gone bankrupt as a result of creating famine relief. Lough Cutra Castle passed through various owners over the next century or so until it arrived in the hands of the current family. Recently, there has been a refurbishment program for both the castle and the estate and the castle now has a new roof and internally it has been brought up to modern standards with lavish and comfortable décor.

On the estate there are wonderful gardens to explore with some hard surface trails which are ideal for mountain biking. There is also a lake (Britain’s largest, privately held lake) on the estate which is ideal for fishing for pike and boating. Lough Cutra Castle is one of several Irish castles to rent that LTR have to offer.
