Perhaps one of England’s prettiest but slowest to navigate counties is Suffolk in East Anglia. It was because of this I set off with slight trepidation to view our three favorite country house rentals in this most special area of England. Luckily no major hold ups occurred and around tea time I was pulling up the drive way to visit Somerleyton, a confection of Victorian grandeur surrounded by impressive gardens and many rolling acres. Lowestoft is about as far East as you can go and this estate hugs the Suffolk/Norfolk border. It is not a well-known area but the coastline is now regarded as among the most stunning in Britain. The house is imposing but very comfortable and welcoming once you enter and perfect for big house parties, with 12 bedrooms and large reception rooms. The area has much to offer and there is a lake and several estate owned pubs within minutes of the house.
Further west, just beyond the very pretty town of Bury St Edmunds, is another LTR favorite, Boxted Hall. Boxted Hall is a moated house which has been lived in by the same family for 23 generations. Here you receive a wonderfully warm welcome from the extremely genial owners who are experts at making sure their guests have the best of times in the most relaxed of atmospheres. The wood paneled hall is a spectacular venue for large dinners with the more formal dining room perfect for smaller gatherings. The bedrooms are beautifully decorated with lovely bathrooms and it is fun to be woken in the morning by the sound of ducks in the moat. The house reeks of history and has a wonderfully cozy feel to it. The historic town of Lavenham with its Elizabethan buildings is close by and Cambridge is only an hour away. The estate surrounds the house and you feel very private and secure in the lovely little valley in which the house sits.
Back towards the coast is LTR’s new superstar Wilderness Reserve which now boasts 7 different rental properties and with more soon due for completion. All the houses although varied in size and style have been done up to an incredibly high standard and are beautifully run by the estate team. This is a wonderful venue for a large 50th birthday as the main house can seat 30 adults in the dining room, 15 kids in the kitchen and everyone can be accommodated within a minute’s walk. The stunning Southwold is close by and now a very ‘in’ place or Aldeburgh for more traditional music lovers. The estate which covers 4,500 acres offers lots of activities and guests can explore this lovely part of the county. There are excellent local pubs and good train links with London for those who don’t want to drive out from London. This is an estate which is already proving hugely popular and which will soon become one of the leading country house rentals in the UK.
