Southwold is a charming seaside town in Suffolk, and one of the most unique coastal travel destinations in the UK. Surrounded by water with the ocean to its east, River Blyth to the west, and Buss Creek to the north, Southwold is almost an island of its own. There’s just one road in and out of town, so if you’re looking for off-the-beaten-path, this is the place to come on your next vacation.
Just 20 minutes drive from Southwold is the stunning Sibton Park which sleeps 24 people in the main house and up to 80 further guests in other luxury accommodation on the estate.
Here are 5 of the best things to do when you’re staying in Southwold.
British weather isn’t always best for sunbathing, so make sure you travel in the summer months if you’re wanting to top up your tan. When the weather is milder, the seafront is a nice spot for beach walks or a beach picnic. The pier and the colorful huts lining the promenade make for a wonderful photo opportunity too. If you’re a keen photographer, arrive early to beat the crowds.
This is a sand and shingle beach (so quintessentially British), and it’s the perfect place for beachcombing.
Set sail on Southwold Boating Lake, either on paddle or rowing boats. This is a family-friendly activity that is suitable for all ages, with amazing views on the water. A leisurely activity that can keep you and your little ones active, and a fantastic alternative to the beach. On site, you will also find crazy golf and a delightful tea room overlooking the lake area.
If you want to try an authentic English afternoon tea, you’ll find the finest sandwiches, scones and cakes here.
Another way to keep active and enjoy the great outdoors in this seaside resort is on two wheels. Cycling is a popular tourist activity in Southwold, because there are no major roads, making it very safe to ride everywhere. Within a 10 mile radius, you can cycle to arty Walberswick, historic Dunwich, or the pretty market town of Halesworth.
Simply visit Southwold Cycle Hire to choose from a vast range of bikes and mountain bikes. Hire starts from just £10 per day (or £25 per week). For families, there are also cycles with child seats or tagalongs, so even toddlers can join in the fun.
The Southwold Coastal Voyager is a 400 horsepower boat, and a must for anyone who enjoys adrenaline-pumping fun at sea. The boat will take you on a 30 minute tour around Sole Bay and you might even spot some seals along the shoreline. There’s also a longer Blyth cruise that will take you around other surrounding areas if you have time. It’s suitable for adults and children, so you can bring the whole family.
Just a short drive down the coast is RSPB Minsmere, a stunning nature reserve set across 1,000 hectares of wet grassland, woodland, reed bed, lowland heath and shingle vegetation. It is managed by the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds, and is home to some rare species. Be sure to explore the reserve’s ‘WildZone’, walk along the nice scenic beach, and enjoy home-cooked meals in the café when it’s time to refuel.
