7 GREAT THINGS TO DO IN TIPPERARY
The charming town of Tipperary in Ireland is surrounded by grand castles, lush mountains and beautiful Irish countryside. Activities include sightseeing, walking, golfing, horse racing and much more. Although small, the town itself is a lovely place to stay, with a number of cafes and pubs and it’s within easy distance to the county’s top attractions.
Famed for the song “It’s a Long Way to Tipperary” during World War I, this destination is steeped in history and the town’s 19th Century shopfronts and Gothic architecture will take you back in time. Here are 7 fantastic things to do on your next visit:
1. VISIT THE AWARD WINNING HERITAGE CENTER
The Cashel Heritage Center and Tourist Office located in the town is one of the best in Ireland. It’s the perfect place to go if you want to learn more about the local area, and even features a large scale model of the town in the 1640s. The model highlights some of Tipperary’s hidden historical gems and the center is open to all, with free admission.
2. WALK THE BALLINACOURTY LOOP
Soak up the fresh air and Irish country views with an invigorating 2-3 hour walk on the Ballinacourty Loop. This circular track starts just a few miles south of the town and spans around 10km, with gradients of 240m. It’s a moderate hike with forest trails and woodland paths, and it’s a great way to explore the outdoors around Tipperary.
3. TOUR ROCK OF CASHEL
Just a short 25 minute drive from Tipperary town center is one of the most spectacular attractions of the region. Also known as St Patrick’s Rock, the Rock of Cashel is a site that dates back to the 12th Century. The site features a number of buildings, including a beautiful chapel, cathedral and round tower.
4. VISIT CAHIR CASTLE
This nearby castle sits atop a rock and is a doorway into the Ireland’s ancient world. A powerful Anglo-Norman family came into possession of Cahir Castle in the 14th Century, who spent much time over the centuries restoring, repairing and rebuilding. The last known alterations were in 1599 and today, the castle maintains the same impressive structure.
5. HIT THE DRIVING RANGE AT TIPPERARY GOLF CLUB
Practice your swing and let off some steam at the Tipperary driving range, or enjoy the scenic mountain views on the par 72 course. There’s a Men’s Club and a Ladies’ Club with daily green fees of €20 (or €15 if you’re with a member). Juniors are also welcome to play here, and there’s a bar and restaurant on site so you can enjoy some food and drink your game.
6. EXPLORE ASHFIELD GARDEN
The gorgeous Ashfield Garden, situated in nearby Glen of Aherlow is a must for anyone who takes an interesting in plants and flowers. The display is simply superb, with plants, trees, shrubs and perennials spread across a whole acre. From here, you can also enjoy views of the Galtee Mountains.
7. GO TO THE RACES
If you love to gamble, keep an eye out for the events taking place at Tipperary Race Course. Ticket prices are very affordable and under 18s can usually go free. There are also a number of restaurant / party packages available if you’re Traveling in a large group.
