7 Great Things to Do in Perthshire, Scotland

25 Jun 2018 by annabel

Perthshire, officially known as County of Perth and home to Scotland’s capital for five centuries. 19th Century Scottish novelist Sir Walter Scott once named it “the fairest portion of the northern kingdom”. And many refer to the region as ‘Big Tree Country’ for being home to some of Britain’s oldest, tallest and most remarkable trees. But whether you’re here for city sights or woodland adventures, there are so many great things to see and places to stay in this wonderful county. Here are 7 great things to do during your Perthshire vacation:

1. Visit the Birnam Oak

Perthshire is a place where trees tell the story of Scotland’s past, and this includes the famous Birnam Oak. This is the ancient tree that featured in William Shakespeare’s Macbeth in 1606. Together with the Birnam Sycamore, these trees are the only survivors of the great forest that once straddled the banks of the River Tay.

2. Enjoy the View from Kinnoull Hill

Take in the panoramic views from the top of Kinnoull Hill in the city of Perth, and walk up this dramatic clifftop escarpment to get to the tower. This route is taken from the city center and is around 4 miles long in total. It’s an easy walk for all ages and will take approximately 2-3 hours to complete.

3. Explore The Hermitage

Protected by the National Trust, this woodland site is a great place for hikers. It covers over 33 acres with trees from the 18th Century and a number of different nature trails to choose from as well as some spots for wild swimming.

4. Spend the Day at Balhousie Castle

The beautiful Balhousie Castle dates back to the 12th Century and today houses the Black Watch Museum. Enjoy a day trip here and walk around the gardens and grounds, or head indoors to discover the collection of weapons and military equipment, uniforms and medals, and fine art paintings. The artifacts have been collected throughout the castle’s long history, all the way up to the more recent conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan.

5. Tour the Scottish Crannog Centre

Visit this ancient loch-dwelling on Loch Tay to experience what life was like over 2,500 years ago. Not only will you have the awe-inspiring backdrop of the loch and surrounding nature, but the center provides a unique full-size reconstruction of ancient dwellings – so you can travel back in time as you walk around. Fantastic for the whole family, and a great place for learning.

6. Go Tasting at Edradour Distillery

Edradour Distillery in Pitlochry is Scotland’s smallest distillery yet despite its size, it produces more whiskeys than most other distilleries in the country. It specializes in single malt whiskey, and the selection features a classic range, cask strength, wine finished whiskeys, wine matured whiskeys, and a Ballechin heavily pleated range. Take a guided tour and be sure to visit the tasting bar afterwards!

7. Catch a Show at Pitlochry Festival Theatre

Soak up some local culture and book a show at the Pitlochry Festival Theater. Attracting more than 100,000 people every year, this unique theater creates exciting productions across the seasons. In addition to the productions, there are also tours, talks, concerts and much more.

Hopefully this has inspired you to start planning your vacation to Scotland. For more information on where to stay, or just general advice, please get in touch. We look forward to hearing from you.
